This wonderful image was made from a location deemed "inaccessible" by the park rangers of Arches National Park, probably because they didn't want hoards of visitors trampling the cryptobiotic soil in this area. Designating this location as "physically" inaccessible rather than "legally" inaccessible seems to have met their goal of protecting the tender microbiotic soil found here.
Nevertheless, with specific photographic goals in mind, I had tacit approval from them to give it a try because they did not forbid me. Physical access is both tricky and amusing and I was very careful not to disturb the "living soil." I tell the complete story in my book, Visual Verse. Suffice it to say here that after making multiple trips to this location over a period of several years, I have never seen evidence of anyone else visiting this location. Nor have I seen other images of Delicate Arch made from this vantage point. It's kind of like my secret "fishing hole." Inasmuch as most of my photography from this location was made several years ago, I am quite sure that by now someone else has been there to further document this exotic landscape.
