This photo in Alaska is near the northernmost limit that black spruce trees (Picea mariana) shown in this photo can grow. I made this image because the small, scraggly trees (this is as large as they can grow at this latitude) were interesting in their own right but make a nice counterpoint to the colorful flora around them. Black spruce is one of the most important trees to the Dena'ina Indians. Their word for spruce, "Ch'vala" is also the name for tree.
The "Top of the World" highway runs from Tok, Alaska to Dawson, British Columbia and is very remote with sparse traffic but it is also full of visual delights like this image aptly titled "Color on Top of the World."
