This image was made just off Highway 191 south of Cisco, Utah. The desert of southeastern Utah normally receives less than eight inches of rain a year but when it does rain, the desert blooms profusely with wildflowers. The bright orange band of color across the upper part of the photo is Desert Globemallow (also called Apricot Mallow). It is the most drought resistant of the mallow family and is grazed upon by Big Horn sheep, domestic sheep and goats.
In wet years like this one, the normally arid desert is a special delight for all nature lovers.
