"The Castle" in this photograph marks the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park in Utah. There are several draws fanning outward from "The Castle" but this is the only one that is populated with these large black volcanic boulders.

Capitol Reef (originally dubbed Wayne Wonderland) is defined by the Waterpocket Fold, a nearly 100-mile long warp in the earth's crust. This is known as a monocline which is a regional fold with one very steep side in an area of otherwise nearly horizontal layers.

Visitors to the more popular destinations like Zion National Park and Bryce National Park are usually delighted when they discover the less crowded Capitol Reef National Park. Photographers to this area experience no end to the great image making opportunities here. Please see my image of "Butte Garden" which is nearby.
